Make Small Changes to Improve Your Workplace Mental Health

How important is mental health awareness for human resources professionals and employers, and how prevalent are mental health issues in the workplace? It’s extremely serious. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we consulate the National Alliance on Mental Health for some sobering statistics:
  • 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.
  • 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year
  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year
  • 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24
  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34
As Forbes pointed out in a recent article, loneliness is the number two emotional issue for remote workers.
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to offer a few simple non-clinical suggestions for in-office, remote employees, and job seekers to consider to help keep stress levels low and motivation high.
Always be candid with yourself and your coworkers about workload.
If you’re feeling pressured, don’t be afraid to ask for some help with your tasks.
Bosses respect employees who ask for help, especially early in projects when there is time to react to staffing requirements, etc. Keep in mind that it’s never too early or too late to ask for assistance.
Job seekers need to keep their search for employment in perspective.
You are a valuable professional, and you will find a great job, so don’t stress about it. This is especially true If you have an excellent recruiter looking out for your best interests.
Stay connected with your coworkers and your team.
Friendships can be fleeting, or sometimes they can last a lifetime—you just never know. So reach out virtually or in person for social events, like happy hours, gamification events, etc.
Approach human resources if you feel you could use some professional support.
HR should treat you with concern and confidentiality. Find out what mental health resources and options are available for you, and take advantage of them. You have nothing to be afraid of or ashamed of.
