Are You Prepping for a Virtual Interview? Follow These Can’t-Miss Tips!
By Katie Majewski
Interviewing TipsVirtual interviews are foundational in the recruiting and hiring process. And job seekers want to hone their virtual interviewing skills.
So let’s start with a definition of what a virtual interview is.
‘’A virtual interview, or video interview, is a job interview that leverages video technology to allow the discussion to take place remotely. Rather than meeting face-to-face, the hiring manager and candidate will connect with each other online using video software. The tools required for this kind of meeting typically include a computer with a built-in or external video camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and headphones if desired.”
That’s a pretty good definition, but let’s add another point. You will probably go through more than one video interview if the recruiting process goes well, so get the interviewing process down well in advance of your job search.
In this post, you will learn how to use these three simple, but super-important, tips to help you ace your video interview:
-
Be Prepared with Your Technology, Your Appearance, and Demeanor
-
Be Prepared with Your Environment
-
Be Personable and Stand Out!
So let’s get started!
Be Prepared with Your Technology, Your Appearance, and Demeanor
Job seekers should look at a virtual interview as if it were face-to-face. A collared, button-down shirt with a blazer and a pair of dress pants is always a good fallback outfit if you’re unsure about what to wear.
Don’t blend into the background of the room by wearing an outfit that’s the same color as the walls. Remember, you want to stand out.
You may also have to stand up during the interview, so no pajama bottoms!
Try to position the camera a few inches above your head and make sure you look into the camera, not your laptop screen. This makes it appear to the interviewer that you’re making eye contact.
Also, make sure that you’re in a room where you can close the door. No pets or family walking in the background during your video interview.
Be Prepared with Your Environment
This starts with a good laptop and a stable internet connection capable of streaming video. If you’re not tech-savvy, just call your internet service provider or your friend the technology nerd to verify.
Make sure your laptop has a functional camera. Check the resolution and get familiar with how to position yourself in front of the camera. Have a backup plan if you lose your internet connection, for any reason, and be ready to set up a hotspot connection from your phone.
Also, make sure the interviewer has your mobile number. Use stone-age technology if all else fails!
Be Personable and Stand Out!
Now it’s time for the fun part. You need to stand out as a candidate. Be personable and ask questions. Don’t be afraid to engage with the interviewer and show your excitement about the company and the position.
It’s also time to talk to a professional recruiting firm.
